Poem: Too Short a Season

The shepherd 
is struck 
by melancholy
as he looks over
his sizable flock 
lambs newly born 
will grow up 
to grace the plates 
of an uncaring 
bunch of nobles 
but at least 
they will know 
love and care 
in their brief 
lifetimes
