Poem: Five Elements, Plus One

Fire, Wood, Water Metal and Earth Wu Xing, Five Elements Each one affects the other For good or for ill. Too much of one upsets the balance and all must be in harmony. Process and change nothing ever stays the same it is the essence of the elements a stick is just a stick a rock is just a rock Wood is the essence of life Earth the stable foundation. Where is air? Fire, Earth, Air, Water, Metal Air surrounds us It need not be said The essence of being in all living things is not limited to just one physical form! All five plus the one encompassing the Spirit, the Soul It will still be there when all is long to dust that spark of existence will carry us on that drive to live will carry us through.

Poem: Happy Chinese New Year!

It's rather odd... My ancestors have come and gone generations separate us and yet... I still feel them every time I take up my brush and trace every character stroke. And every time I put my hands around a bowl of steaming egg drop soup. When I go through language lessons wrapping my head around measure words and many dialects. I try to pick up noodles with the plain wooden chopsticks with very little grace. Today starts a new year The Year of the Wood Snake "Gõngxĩ făcái. Happy New Year."

Poem: Playing the Headless Chicken (Erhu, Chinese Violin)

Image
Two strings dusty and unused for a very long time. Not a great quality they told me but it should suffice for someone who is just starting to play. What matters to me is that it is a connection to who has played before. The blood that runs in my veins the tunes that used to float through the air. It will take me years. It will take a lot of practice. "Headless chicken" screeching until I get the bowing and the fingering just right. But the joy is in the journey In the discovery and the challenge I hope my ancestors smile even if they might cringe as I take baby steps into perfection.

Poem: From Rabbit to Dragon (Chinese New Year)

I. Rabbit in the moon watching for an entire year it is all amused at mankind's quirks and foibles bathing all in silver light. II. Vigil is closing as the moon rises and sets others take the stage someone not so retiring and a boldness in the sky III. Yin flows into Yang Cycle builds ever upwards Wait with bated breath the soft coming of the dawn bright light glints on waiting scales. IV. No, not the Phoenix but the mythic companion Strong but always there to breathe the cleansing fire for those that came before it. V. The rabbit awaits the end of their nightly vigil greets the welcome light Nods at the wise old dragon and vanishes with the night.
