Poem: What Lies Beneath

The gleaming tower
still needs a foundation
that extends into the ground.
That solid base
supports what stretches up
to the sky.
What you see is white marble
what you don't see is concrete
strong and sure
capable of holding up the weight
of the wealth above.
But what is it that you don't see?
Hidden beneath your eyes
and not fit for the public?
Is it as sturdy as it needs to be?
When was the last time
anyone bothered to check it?
For a structure is only as strong
as its weakest link.
