Poem: That is Not My Name

My name is too difficult
for them to say:

"I'll call you this instead."

Reduced to syllables
meant for a casual tongue.

That is not my name.

Nicknames said in jest
laughing in private humor.

I don't find it funny.

Adopting a new identity
to fit in with accepted rules.

This isn't me at all.

But I have to reinvent myself
have a new mindset

Erase the old one.

Until in the long run
I don't remember who I was.

I am forgotten.
